NEW YORK (CNN) --A new generic version of the drug Nexium will soon be sold as a way to prevent heartburn, but the big-selling drug still isn't working. U. S. regulators want to find a way to make that happen.
In a letter sent to a joint news conference on Tuesday, Pfizer's chief executive said it will ask the Food and Drug Administration to approve the generic version of Nexium, which will be sold in about 50 countries.
"Pfizer has been evaluating the safety and efficacy of other drugs and has decided to offer the new drug to patients who have had heartburn in the past and to patients who have had other chronic conditions," said Sidney Wolfe, director of the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.
The company did not provide a specific timeline for when the company would begin selling the drug.
In December, Pfizer began testing the drug for ulcers as a possible treatment for ulcers in patients who have never had a heart attack, the company said.
Nexium, marketed as Nexium 20mg, is the drug in the current blockbuster drug class of the heartburn drug Prilosec. The generic Prilosec, which Pfizer has bought for $35 billion, will soon become the first drug to treat acid-related symptoms of GERD.
In addition to Prilosec, the company has also launched three other products in the market for Nexium. But the FDA has not yet approved the new generic Prilosec. The drug's maker, GlaxoSmithKline plc, is in talks with AstraZeneca about selling Prilosec and wants to keep the product on the market until that deal is fully completed.
The company said it has not discussed a generic version of Prilosec with the FDA, and it does not expect to have that deal yet.
"As we currently have a new generic Prilosec, we are aware of the risks associated with the previously approved brand-name drug and we will work with the FDA to work out a way to bring this product to market as early as possible," said Pfizer spokesman Charlie Peltzer.
